Humanity and Our Worldly Experience (2011)

Lauren Edmonds

2:10 min animation from charcoal drawings

This animation created using a number of individual drawings, explores how every individual has their own perspective on the world which together form a whole world perspective. It also explores how our limited views of the world could end up being the cause of our ultimate destruction.

Ignorance leads to lack of understanding, which leads to misunderstanding, which leads to conflict. The cones are used as they are virtually the same shapes as spyglasses which I relate back to the ideas of individual outlooks and views on the world. I decided to use the cones in my final animation piece as structures that encase living humans. This is to represent the limitations of our individual perspectives and that we can only see as far as we really want to see or as far as our daily routines and lifestyles ‘allow’ us to.

With this animation work, I received an Excellence award for Visual Art and Design (2011) as part of Creative Generation Queensland. This means this work will tour around the state in 2012-13 with other works created by other Queensland students awarded the Excellence Award. These works will first be exhibited in the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) in 2012.
