Melancholic and reflective, Double Take is a mixed media self-portrait presented as a diptych, drawn and painted on masonite panels. The panels are shaped and arranged to evoke a train window, with curved outer corners and a central divide.

The work is based on photographs of the artist’s own reflection in a train window at night. The artist is inspired by the visual ambiguity of looking into darkness interrupted by passing light, and the subtle distortions of reflections in the double pane glass.

There is a strong sense of movement, yet also a sense of stillness. A moment is captured where the artist’s gaze meets the viewer in the eye. Through this duality and reference to the distortions of reflections and moving light – the artist aims to capture a transient feeling or moment where one may contemplate one’s own place, sense of self, and personal agency in a fast-paced and uncertain world.
