Turbulent Waters (2010)
Lauren Edmonds
Fine point ink pens on Arches paper, 76x56cm [SOLD]
This artwork originated from a sketch in my visual diary. The lone figure in the background has been drawn differently to the other figures in the foreground. This was to represent the lone figure’s feeling of being excluded.
One of the figures in the foreground is looking towards the lone figure. This gives the impression to the viewer that the figures in the foreground are aware of the isolated figure yet choose to ignore him/her.
The waves in the drawing represent the idea of the crowd in the foreground leaving the lone figure to drown in his/her own self doubt and feelings of rejection.
The rope that binds the figure symbolises the feeling of not being able to escape the dark thoughts surrounding him/her.
People isolating other people seems to be a common occurance in our everyday lives; whether it is an obvious situation or not, or whether it involves the isolation of just an individual or a group. This phenomenon has great phychological effect on people, particularly on the ones being excluded.
