To Break Free? (2010)

I first started drawing the preliminary sketch for this artwork in my visual diary in 2009. It was originally inspired by one of my favourite songs, Under Pressure (Queen & David Bowie). After drawing the preliminary sketch however, I felt that I needed to draw another piece that further expressed what the song meant to me. This is how my artwork Under Pressure (2009) evolved after more reflection on the song.

To Break Free (2010), focuses on the pressures in our life that seem to enclose us – making us feel trapped until it eventually compresses our ability to express ourselves. I believe that in our ever growing chaotic world that we live in, many of us feel under pressure – from whether it’s work, family or just the pressure to fit in. The title was inspired by another song, To Break Free by Queen. The question mark at the end of the title represents the questioning that goes through our minds, ‘How am I to Break Free?’, ‘Will I come through’.
